The men’s final was a show down between world numbers one and two - Roger Federer won the first set in only 20 minutes, conceding just ten points to the formerly unbeatable Novak Djokovic. It was the first time in their 28 career encounters that one of them took a set to love.

Djokovic, who won the Rogers Cup last Sunday, sprung to life in the second set. The Serb came closer to the net. A spectacular rally in the second game raised the volume in the arena.

Roger Federer of Switzerland serves during the semifinals of the Western & Southern
Open at the Lindner Family Tennis Center on August 18. Federer won his sixth title
of the season as he beat second-seeded Novak Djokovic 6-0, 7-6 (9/7) to claim a
record fifth Cincinnati Masters on Sunday.

It was the graceful Swiss who blasted a tantalizing backhand to take the winner. Federer was just too good hitting a barrage of perfectly placed shots.

Djokovic then put it into top gear, forcing the set to a tiebreaker, and the Serb was closing in. But Federer got the better of his opponent who previously stood in his way.

The 31-year-old veteran closed it out with a crisp forehand winer to win 6-love, 7-6. Now Federer heads to the U.S. Open feeling healthy and finely-tuned, just like the good old days as the world’s No. 1.
