With one week to go until the start of the Paralympic Games in London, four Paralympic Flames came alive on Wednesday at the highest peaks in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, all at roughly the same time. LOCOG chair Sebastian Coe was on hand to witness the lighting ceremony in Wales.

Amid heavy fog, a group of disabled and able-bodied scouts reached the summit of Mount Snowdon. They struck a metal rod against a rough steel surface to ignite sparks to light the flame. A Paralympic torch was then lit and the flame was placed in traditional miners’ lamps for safe keeping. Each flame ignited at the four sites around Great Britain now begins a journey taking in Stoke Mandeville, the "spiritual home" of the Paralympic Games. There, they will be united as a single flame and carried to London for the opening ceremony.

Sebastian Coe, LOCOG Chair, said, "It was really nice to be out and doing this morning and three other flames being lit at pretty much the same time and really signifying the week's journey to London, which will be fantastic."

Alex Peer Draycott, Volunteer Torchlighter, said, "To be up here at one of the first torch lightings and be actually helping it, is really incredible."
