The long chapter of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games finally came to a colourful end last night.

When asked about China’s sporting prowess, the man responsible for delivering the London games, Lord Sebastian Coe, praised the efforts of the world’s most populous nation. In a one on one interview, Coe says he visited Beijing recently to see how Chinese athletes trained and he was impressed with what he saw.

The sun sets on London 2012 - Just over six weeks have past since the Olympic opening ceremony and most observers are positive – that the games were a success not that the organizers feel it is there place to make that assessment.

China enjoyed an astonishingly successful game - Second spot in the Olympic medal table and streets ahead of the rest in the Paralympic table. Lord Coe is impressed.

More than 2.5 million tickets were sold for the Paralympics alone. Stadiums and arenas were completely sold out. The Paralympic movement, it appears, has made great strides this past fortnight.

The attention for Coe and for London is to now concentrate on the legacy of the games. Doubts remain over the future of the main stadium while the rest of the facilities need to be managed correctly in order to be fully utilized. Coe’s message is clear.

So that’s it then for London 2012 - a games that has provided images and stories that will live long in the memory. It’s a hard act to follow and that’s the challenge now for organizers of Rio 2016.
