The Philippines has said it has sent no more than 80 marines to islands disputed with China, not the previously reported 800 member-force. On Tuesday, the Major General of the Philippines Western Military command, Juancho Sabban, said about eight hundred marines have already been dispatched for patrols to areas close to the Palawan Island in the South China Sea, one of what is known as the Nansha Islands in China.

Sabban explained that the act was only for self-defense, and shouldn’t be seen as provocation. The Philippines Armed Forces spokesman later denied this, and said only 77 marines were sent to reinforce the two marine battalions already stationed there. And it has no relations with the territorial dispute.
