Pressure is mounting on China’s expressways this weekend, as people return home from their golden week holidays. Beijing authorities say at least 1.6 million cars are now on the main highways leading into the capital.

Meanwhile, Beijing’s Capital Airport says over 15,000 planes carrying around 260,000 passengers will arrive or depart during Saturday.

440 temporary trains have been laid on for routes terminating in Beijing and Shanghai destination. And the traffic is increasing on major national highways. Tail-backs are predicted in Hebei, Anhui, Shandong, and Hubei provinces, with the high holiday numbers made worse by foggy weather conditions.

When the 8-day holiday began on September 30th, more than 85 million cars hit the road. The numbers were boosted by a government decision to suspend highways tolls for passenger cars. As a result, the start of the holiday saw nationwide traffic jams in 16 provinces and municipalities.

Many people spent hours stranded on highways, and journey times became significantly longer. One driver said his 300 kilometer journey from Shanghai to Nanjing city took 10.5 hours to complete.
