The second-seeded Sharapova took on Angelique Kerber of Germany in other quarter-final play. In the first set, the Russia overpowered her German opponent early on, hitting winner after winner in what quickly became a one-sided set. Kerber’s attempts to slow down the tempo went unsuccessful. Sharapova swept the set 6-0.

Kerber tried to claw back in the second. Taking two of the three games to deuces.

But she would trail 3-love and Kerber would be forced to call for medical help and after her right calf or foot was examined, Kerber approached Sharapova, shaking hands and retiring. So Sharapova will meet Li Na for a place in the final.
