This year saw the Mid-autumn Festival and National Day run together, allowing the double holiday to be a boon for China’s tourism sector, as visitor numbers and revenue saw sharp increases.

119 scenic spots across the country raked in over 1.7 billion yuan, up almost 25 percent from the previous year. From September 29th to October 6th, over 55 thousand flights carried over 7.6 million passengers. And on the nation’s railways, the number hit over 60 million, up 9.4% year on year. And thanks to the toll-free policy, more travellers hit the road with their own cars.

Shanghai’s expressways saw more than a 40 percent rise in inbound and an over 70 percent jump in outbound passenger cars. In the country’s southwest Guizhou province, 55 percent of the tourists who visited, arrived in their own cars. Meanwhile, estimates put the revenue that could have been made if toll fees had been charged at expressways during the holidays, at 20 billion yuan.
