Video: US Airforce General Herbert Carlisle to visit Japan

10-22-2012 13:54 BJT

US Airforce General Herbert Carlisle is due to visit the headquarters of Japan’s Air Self-Defense Force on Monday. His visit comes amid tension between China and Japan over the Diaoyu Islands.

According to Japan’s Defense Ministry, General Carlisle’s visit is a regular visit after becoming Commander in August. Japan is developing its diplomatic activities during the stand-off over the islands. Foreign Minister Koichiro Gemba has visited France, Britain and Germany, to reiterate Japan’s official line in meetings with his European counterparts.

While Europe is cool on Japan’s claim to the Diaoyu Islands, Japan-US relations are also sour after two US sailors in Japan allegedly raped a local woman. The governor of Japan’s Okinawa island, where the attack is said to have taken place, is also visiting the US, calling for fundamental changes to the Japan-US Status of Forces Agreement.
