By CCTV reporter Meng Qingsheng

The continued violence in Syria has sent large numbers of refugees fleeing to neighbouring countries. In Lebanon alone, the number has now surpassed a hundred thousand. Some are working in major cities like Beirut.

Making a living in a foreign land. Most Syrian refugees have to start from nothing, in order to survive. In Lebanon’s capital Beirut, many work as street peddlers, construction workers, and also taxi drivers.

Samir, Syrian refugee in Lebanon, said, "I have received no assistance from the UN refugee agency. And nobody has once contacted me."

Syrian refugees like Samir face various challenges in Lebanon. It’s hard for them to get integrated into the local life. Samir says he needs to exercise extra caution to drive a taxi on the streets of Beirut. A simple scrape and he could face demands for compensation of several hundred US dollars.

Samir said, "Not every local person will behave as such, and mistreat foreigners. But, many do."

Samir shares a 30-square-meter apartment with three other refugees working as taxi drivers in suburban Beirut. In October, a blast in the city worsened the situation and affected their business.

And now on top of that, the approaching winter will add more difficulties to the life of Samir and refugees like him.
