Video: Asia-Europe summit readies in Laos

11-05-2012 13:41 BJT

The biennial Asia-Europe Meeting summit was first launched in 1996 in the Thai capital, Bangkok. It has since alternated between Asia and Europe. The trans-regional summit has made for a crucial opportunity to build tighter relations and develop more effective cooperation between the two continents.

It’s also drawn increasing attention from the international community. Having expanded to 51 members, the meeting will now cover a block representing 60 percent of the global population, half the world’s GDP and more than 60 percent of all international trade. The theme for this year is "Friends for Peace, Partners for Prosperity."
