Video: US, Japan hold biennial joint military exercise

11-05-2012 13:41 BJT

Japan and the United States will hold a biennial joint military exercise in Japan from Monday. It is a move likely to further heighten tensions between China and Japan over disputed islets in the East China Sea.

An official at Japan’s Self-Defense Forces said about 37,400 military personnel from Japan will join some 10,000 U.S. troops in the drill. And naval, land and air forces from both countries are expected to participate in the drills, which will last from November the 5th to the 16th.

The drill was originally supposed to be carried out near an uninhabited island in Okinawa prefecture, but was cancelled due to pressure from China and rape accusations against a US soldier in Okinawa.
