Video: Ferrer defeats Janowicz to claim title

11-05-2012 14:00 BJT

Two players who’d never won an ATP 1000 title lined up in Paris on Sunday to claim their first. Spanish fourth seed David Ferrer took on Jerzy Janowicz, a 21-year old Polish qualifier who had beaten five top 20 players, including world number three Andy Murray, in this week’s remarkable run.

Ferrer had lost on his three previous appearances at a Masters final, always against a Grand Slam winner but this time his opponent was far less experienced. Although Janowicz sent down 11 aces, there were also six double faults. Ferrer took the first set 6-4 after Janowicz had squandered a break point in the previous game.

In the second set Janowicz broke for 2-1, but quickly lost the advantage and when Ferrer moved to 4-2 on the double fault, the game was up.

Ferrer closed out a 6-4, 6-3 win in 88 minutes when Janowicz put a backhand return wide. Janowicz does, however, break into the top 30 on the ATP Tour rankings while Ferrer, having bagged seven titles this year, now qualifies for the APT World Tour finals in London.
