Monday marks the fourth anniversary of the worst terrorist attack in India. The carnage lasted four days in the city of Mumbai, killing 164 people and wounding at least 300. And a few days ago, Ajmal Kasab, the lone gunman who was captured during the attack was hanged to death.

On November 26, 2008, ten Islamist terrorists landed from the Arabian Sea in the port of Mumbai. Over the next four days, they turned India’s largest city into a nightmare.

The Leopold Cafe, a popular restaurant and bar on Colaba Causeway in the south of the city, was one of the first sites to be hit. Two attackers opened fire on the cafe in the evening, killing 10 people, and injuring many more.

Farhang S. Jehani, owner of Leopold Café, said, "It was hardly that I reach that upstairs, that I hear a big exploration, Before I could even reach the window from that bar upstairs, you know, I could hear the fighting from the bullets guns. In 2 minutes, there was people shouting, screaming, and all of a sudden there was silence."

Despite the passing of time, bullet holes in the glass and scars on the war still remind people of the pain. But people are returning to the Cafe today, to commemorate those who died.

Besides the Cafe, another ten coordinated shooting and bombing attacks were conducted across Mumbai. Targets included the city’s central railway station, a world cultural heritage building listed by UNESCO; the Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident hotels, all city landmarks.

It took police four days to bring the carnage to an end. India’s National Security Guards conducted Operation Black Tornado. It resulted in the deaths of all but one of the last remaining attackers at the Taj Hotel.

Four years on, three National Guard bases have been established, and police equipment has been upgraded.

Mumbai residents said, "After 4 years, after that incident at 26, December 2008, via the accidents, we learn a lot, now we have better police to stop them, to protect ourselves, to enhance the confidence of the people, and by all level, and in all dimensions, we already have good policemen, I can see surely to that."

It’s taken nearly four years to bring the whole event to a conclusion. Ajmal Kasab, the sole attacker captured alive, and who was sentenced to death in May 2010, was hanged at Yerwada Jail in Pune last week.
