Algeria government special forces have stormed a natural gas complex in the Sahara desert, bringing the hostage crisis officially to an end.

The four-day standoff has left 23 hostages dead. 32 militants have also been killed.

685 Algerian workers and 107 foreigners have been rescued. On Saturday, the Ennahar TV broadcast several photographs it said were taken during the hostage crisis. It was not possible to independently verify what was happening in the images, or when exactly during the standoff they were taken.

The broadcaster did not say who took the pictures. The hostage crisis began when militants, who came from a Mali-based al-Qaida splinter group run by an Algerian, attacked the plant on Wednesday morning.
