Xiong Zhaozhong retains WBC strawweight title

Chinese boxer, Xiong Zhaozhong defended his WBC strawweight title against Denver Cuello of the Philippines in Dubai. China’s first pro title belt holder retains his title with a victory on points after dominating most of teh most the twelve rounds.

It’s the first time the United Arab Emirates has hosted a world championship bout, there is a huge Filiipino community there.

Xiong started his title defence with caution as Cuello enjoyed advantage in both height and reach and early on in the first round connected with a left hook sending the defending champion to the ground. The fillipino fans sensed their man was going to do it.

But after pickign himselfup off the canvas the 30-year-old recovered quickly and was in control from the second round. Xiong landed several good punches in the fifth round and again in the eighth Cuello was struggling to stay in the fight and things turn even worse for the challenger in the 9th round as his face began to bleed and his right shoulder appeared badly injured.

After some treatment, Cuello returned to fight but could do little to stop the Chinese fighter from retaining his title. Xiong, on points and now has 21 career wins.

"My opponent is very tough and I suffered a lot. But finally I won this fight and defended my title. Thank you everyone! I will work hard and win more championship belts. Thank you!" Xiong Zhaozhong, Retains WBC Strawweight Title said.
