Simple but passionate, Tibetan Opera is a cherished art form that is flourish on the plateau. Every year, thousands of Tibetans travel to Norbulingka Park to enjoy performances. And the Shoton Festival is essentially a stage for that art form.

Lavish, flamboyant and amazingly eye-catching. Tibetan Opera impresses with striking masks and vigorous dancing. It’s been loved for centuries by the people on the high plateau.

This opera troupe from Qonggyai county in Shannan Prefecture is reliving an ancient classic, Prince Nuosang.

"White mask opera is believed to be the oldest form of Tibetan opera. This repertoire is played extensively in Tibet," said Basang, choreographer from Qonggyai White Mask Opera Troupe.

Sixty-five year old Karma Tsering is the oldest performer in the troupe. He learned his skills from his father and uncles. And now he’s ready to pass it down to the next generation.

"I am very happy to see that Tibetan opera is being revived. In Shannan prefecture alone there are 34 Tibetan opera troupes. They are well funded with costumes, instruments and stage props. It’s reassuring to see that young actors are beginning to take up Tibetan Opera," said Karma Tsering.

Historical pageantry, myth and magic are woven together with earthly humor and scenes from the daily lives of ordinary Tibetans.

Its simplicity and vigour echoes the typical Tibetan landscape. The actors’ passion is contagious.

"I have travelled all the way from the south for their show. Every year during the Shoton Festival, there’s a comprehensive repertoire of Tibetan opera on show. We love it," an audience member Gyatsho said.
