Tibetan horse race more than just about winning

08-09-2013 14:55 BJT Special Report: Inside Tibet |

Millions of Tibetans are preparing for the horse racing festival across the Tibetan Plateau on Saturday.

The most important ritual before the race, is bathing the horses in ice-cold lake water. Tibetans believe this can help wash away the “Qi”, or bad spirits, inside their bodies, so that they can perform better on the track.

Tibet is the roof of the world, over 4,000 meters above the sea level. Tibetans believe they are closer to heaven, and their horses are divine creatures coming all the way from the sky. The horse-racing festival is a day to celebrate these animals.

Tibetan horses enjoy a very high status in Tibetans’ life. On the plateau, the natural environment is harsh, temperatures are low and the air is thin. People can’t live without horses. They are a critical means of transportation, and together, they battle nature on the high altitude plateau.
