Frequent Sino-US military exchanges in recent years

08-17-2013 12:23 BJT

The defense ties between China and the United States have grown increasingly closer in recent years. The two countries frequently exchange views on security and national defense, as well as regional and global issues.

Sino-US defense ties are warming up.

Earlier in April, US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel made a phone call to Chinese National Defense Minister Chang Wanquan, to discuss DPRK nuclear issues.

Hagel stressed to General Chang the importance of sustained US-China dialogue and cooperation on DPRK issues.

In late April, General Chang hosted the Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, Martin Dempsey, in Beijing. Both sides stressed that they should respect each other’s core interests and major concerns and gradually eliminate the barriers to bilateral ties.

Back to May 2012, Former Defense Minister Liang Guanglie paid a six-day visit to the United States. It was the first visit by a Chinese Defense Minister in nine years...and a new chapter has begun since then.

Liang met with US government and military leaders. He also visited several US military bases. Former Defense Secretary Leon Panetta hosted Liang at the Pentagon on May 7th, 2012.

The two sides had an "in-depth" and "candid discussion" on the two countries’ interests and the international security situation. They reached agreements reaffirming the need for continuous strategic communication to enhance mutual trust.
