The accident claimed six lives, among them two Indonesian citizens and four Chinese tourists.

A witness to the accident said the bus was driving up the hill to the temple when its engine failed.

"The bus came to Uluwatu temple to see the ketchakan and the bus go up and the bus get stopped the engine. So the bus can try to start, but cannot start and then the bus come back, like a zigzag, like a snake and then the bus get down." Vitness Wayan Somer said.

Three of the wounded were intensively treated in a hospital, while the other six only had minor injuries. All the injured are now in stable conditions.

"We just moved, if I can move the people inside I move. If not, we just wait for the search and rescue from Denpasar to help bring the scissor to cut some of the bus." Wayan Somer said.

Local authorities have recovered and identified the bodies of the six dead.

The cause of the accident is currently being investigated.
