English Premier League: Manchester City aims for top spot

12-28-2013 13:18 BJT

Part two of the festival schedule in England today.

For those who suffered on Boxind Day they’ve had to wait just forty-eigth hours to put it right.

But for Manchester City they’ll be looking for the same again.

The Citizens beat Liverpool, who had been top Christmas, and they’ll be at home, again, to Crystal Palace knowing at least a draw will move them to first place in the table. Palace also picked up three points two days ago.

Manuel Pellergini, Manchester City Manager, said, "Of course it is different (from playing Liverpool on Boxing Day). Maybe everyone thinks we are going to win against Crystal Palace playing an easy game. I think that all the teams that are in a relegation position are very tough (and has been) every game that we have played against them. We must now try to recover as soon as we can and be in our best shape and we will see what happens next Saturday, but I don’t think it will be an easy game."

Tony Pulis, Crystal Palace Manager"I just think it... it’s a 38 game season and everybody is, well I do and you know me, take it game by game. We play Man City in two days time which will be very, very difficult for us. They are averaging just under five goals a game at home. So, we know how tough it is going to be in the next game and it rolls and the next game and the next and there is no easy games. So, you have to just stay focused. It gives me an opportunity and a chance now to talk to the chairman and hopefully bring one or two players in - which we need. We really are down, or we were down on players today. So it gives us that opportunity. We have... we have done very well over the past month or so but we have got to keep it going."

Manager-less, Cardiff who we mentioned earlier, are in action on Staurday in the late game against fellow strugglers Sunderland.

Manchester United travel to Norwich. And the early game features West Ham and West Brom.

Sam Allardyce, West Ham United Manager, said, "We have had a few six-pointers already this season, so we have to make sure we end up with a win out of this game (Saturday’s match against West Bromwich Albion) if we possibly can to close the gap on the teams that are above us. It’s critical for us to try to secure three points because even with three points that would be 17 (points) after 19 games. It’s still not enough but at least it’s a start."
