Chinese communities in Sydney are also honouring the ancient tradition of lunar new year celebrations. Various events are being held in the downtown district.

Happy New Year from the Belmore Park Chinese night market here in central Sydney. According to our Lord Mayor, Sydney has the largest Lunar New Year celebrations outside China. This year there are 80 events. And this is the place to be if you’re in Australia’s largest city and you’re looking for free entertainment, dragon dancing, fireworks and authentic cuisine.

Some of Sydney’s best Asian restaurants and chefs are here cooking and demonstrating the most delicious Chinese food. Having lived in Asia for many years, I feel I can say that the dumplings are just as good as what you’d get served in Hong Kong, Shanghai or Beijing.

Sydney only started officially celebrating CNY 18 years ago, with a small community event in Chinatown, attended by only a few hundred people.

Well the local Chinese population and tourist numbers have swelled since those days. And this year more than 600 thousand visitors have come to Sydney to celebrate the Year of the Horse.

This festival is expected to give the city a financial boost of more than 6 million US dollars. The horse is known for being majestic, energetic and fond of a good time and that really sums up the atmosphere here in Sydney.
