UK capital welcomes Year of the Horse

The Year of the Horse arrived on January the 31st, but London held its big celebrations on Sunday. Zhang Lan reports on the festivities.

London is welcoming the Year of the Horse with traditional red lanterns, music, lion dances, and drumming. It’s one of the biggest Chinese New Year celebrations outside Asia.

Hundreds of thousands of people are in a festive mood and have flocked to Chinatown for the fun.

Chinatown is not just a place to experience Chinese traditions. It also serves as a center to unite people and share culture.

"They(my children) are really looking forward to see the dragons in the parade. They are all fans of it." a visitor said.

It’s very interesting to see a lot of different countries come to here, enjoy the food and experience a bit of Chinese the Asian culture.

Chinatown itself is always at the center of the New Year party.

Traditional craft stalls and food stands are being set up outside restaurants. A lion dance snaked through the throngs of visitors, stopping by restaurants to wish the owners good luck for the coming year.

Dim-sum, roast duck or fried noodles.

It looks like everyone here has a Chinese-stomach today and a craving for their favorite foods.

"Well, soup is very nice. And I like dumpling, this sort of dumpling." a visitor said.

"My favourite is chaomian. You like the black bean sauce with chicken, don’t you? And duck, duck is very nice too. There’s not much we don’t like, no." a visitor said.

More than 500,000 visitors are enjoyinhg London’s celebrations for the Year of the Horse, a record number.
This festival is giving a boost to restaurants and vendors.

And it wouldn’t be Chinese New Year without the red envelopes of lucky money. This celebration shows that Chinese culture isn’t just for the Chinese--it’s welcomed in London and around the world.
