7.4 mln trips in one day create new record as Spring Festival holidays end

Millions of people are on their way back from their hometowns as the Spring Festival Holiday comes to an end. With Thursday being the final day of the holiday, a total of 7.4 million trips by train were made on Wednesday, setting a new record during the Spring Festival travel rush.

China Railway Corporation operated 720 extra trains to cope with the travel peak.

Bad weather has put even more pressure on the country's transport system. A snow storm sweeping through the central and eastern areas of the country, meanwhile affected many peoples' journeys. Snow on the ground in some areas was as thick as 16 centimeters. 69 highways were temporarily closed and several trains lowered speed for safety reason.
