Al-Qaida group claims April attack in Yemen

05-12-2010 20:12 BJT

A US-based militant tracking organization says Al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula has claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing in Yemen on April 26th.

The target was the British Ambassador, but he was unhurt in the blast. The AQAP identified the bomber as Uthman Noman al-Salwi and provided his picture. He detonated his explosives belt near the Ambassador's armored car in a poor neighborhood of the capital, San'a. Al-Salwi had previously been jailed for two years for suspected ties to al-Qaida.

In an interview after the bombing, his father said that authorities had agreed to release his son into parental custody. But, he said his son disappeared without notifying his family of his whereabouts.
