Underwater archeology research in China has developed from exploration into the comprehensive protection of relics in the past two decades.

The wreck of the ancient merchant ship "Nanhai One" was discovered in the waters of Yangjiang in Guangdong Province in 1987. Archeologists positioned the vessel and retrieved more than 4,000 items in 2002.

The ship itself was raised in December, 2007, and moved into a purpose-built exhibition hall. In 2005, the "Wanjiao One" was found in the waters of Pingtan in Fujian Province.

It yielded more than 16,000 pieces of porcelain made in the Qing Dynasty, the greatest number for any Chinese mission. To date, more than 100 archeological sites have been found in Chinese territorial waters.
