Prosecutors in Haiti are calling for a jail sentence for a US woman, in her failed attempt to remove 33 children from Haiti after the country's January earthquake.

40-year-old Laura Silsby, was charged with kidnapping and criminal association, after she tried to take the children without proper documents to neighboring Dominican Republic.

On Thursday, prosecutors told the court that Silsby was aware she was breaking the law. But Silsby said she thought the children were orphans whose homes were destroyed in the earthquake.

It was later determined that the children had at least one living parent, but that the parents had turned their children over to Silsby in hopes of securing better lives.

Silsby now faces one count of arranging illegal travel under a 1980 statute, and could face a six-month sentence, the minimum jail time recommended under the law.
