Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan holds his first press conference

Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan held his first news conference in Toyko following the announcement on the lineup of his new cabinet.

Naoto Kan is keeping the bulk of the existing Cabinet, including the country's powerful foreign and defense ministers. But he added several new faces as he seeks to distance his government from the previous. Kan says they would like to create a government that is thoroughly clean and accountable.

The 63 year-old leader wants rejuvenate the ruling party's image, in the wake of Hatoyama and Ichiro Ozawa's political funds scandals. He also wants to turn around Japan's struggling economy, as well as Tokyo's continuing negotiations over a controversial US Marine base on Okinawa. Kan will attend an ceremony at the Imperial Palace and his Cabinet will be sworn in later on Tuesday.
