Arab nations urged Israel to join a global anti-nuclear arms pact. The message was released on Thursday at a meeting of the UN's nuclear watchdog, one day after new sanctions were passed against Tehran.

Mohamed Mostafa Fawzy, Egypt's Ambassador to IAEA, said, "So what we are discussing here is how to apply the safeguard to every state in the Middle East. This is a precise point that we have to deal with, applying the safeguards. This is not only that we are asking Israel to join the NPT (Non-Proliferation Treaty) or not. We are asking for the application of the safeguards agreements on all states in the Middle East."

It was the first time in the past two decades the IAEA's policy-making board had a debate on "Israeli nuclear capabilities". Israel condemned the push, rejecting Western allegations that it is seeking to develop nuclear weapons. The country has neither confirmed nor denied it has nuclear weapons.
