Abu Dhabi 35-storey skyscraper 'leans nearly five times more' than Tower of Pisa to claim world record

06-11-2010 08:56 BJT

A 525ft building in Abu Dhabi has been recognised as the furthest-leaning tower in the world by Guinness World Records.

The Capital Gate tower, which stands at 160 metres, or 35-storeys, high, leans at 18 degrees – nearly five times the angle of Italy's Leaning Tower of Pisa which is at 4 degrees westward.

Developed by the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Company, the building will house a five-star hotel and offices. Its exterior was completed in January and the tower is expected to open this year.

Unlike the Tower of Pisa, which slanted with time, Capital Gate was designed at an angle, made possible by staggering floor plates from the 12th floor up.

The building is 'designed to provide no symmetry so it amazes inside and outside', boasts its website
