Kyrgyzstan's interim leader is visiting the southern town of Osh. Roza Otunbayeva has promised to work for the return of refugees.

Roza Otunbayeva, Kyrgyzstan's interim leader, said, "We have to give hope by all means that we shall restore the city, return all the refugees and create all conditions for that. I think the entire world will be helping us, because we - two peoples - have the goodwill to live in peace and friendship together."

This is Otunbayeva's first visit to the partially destroyed southern city since the unrest started a week ago. She met local leaders in a gesture of reconciliation.

The interim leader insists good will between ethnic Kyrgyz and Uzbeks will end hostilities.

Otunbayeva earlier said the real number of the deaths from recent riots could be ten times the official figure of 191, citing unnoticed deaths in the countryside.
