Jamaican gang leader Christopher Coke has arrived in New York City under tight security. He will face charges that he flooded the United States' East Coast with shipments of cocaine and marijuana.

Since 1994, members of Coke's notorious Shower Posse gang in Jamaica and their US counterparts "have sold narcotics, including marijuana and crack cocaine, at Coke's direction.

Coke was captured on Tuesday after a month long manhunt which claimed 76 lives in street clashes between fiercely loyal supporters and security forces in his power base in the Tivoli Gardens area of Kingston, Jamaica.

He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison in the United States if convicted of drug and gun trafficking charges.

The gang leader has expressed confidence he will be found innocent and allowed to return to his family in Jamaica.
