More than 300 workers and soldiers are narrowing a 340-meter breach in a dyke in east China's Jiangxi Province. Floods from the raging water have killed 235 people in the southern part of the country.

The Fuhe River in Fuzhou City breached its banks for the second time early Wednesday.

It came two days after a dyke on another section of the river burst, forcing the evacuation of 100,000 people.

The first breach was 340 meters wide.

Since Friday morning workers have been trying to narrow it from each side of the breach.

300 trucks are bringing in rocks from 40 kilometers away to plug the breach.

Rescuers say they plan to fix it in six days. But thanks to good weather and no rain the past two days, the work progressed faster than expected.

As the breach narrows, water would flow faster making it more difficult to block it completely.

The rescuers are not planning to fix the second breach, which is 130 meters wide.

They will use it to channel out water. At the same time, they will keep a close eye on it to make sure it would not cause trouble.

Luckily prices of the most basic necessities didn't increase after 100,000 people were relocated to the downtown area of Fuzhou. Only vegetables were slightly more expensive.

Fuzhou has 20 temporary shelters accommodating more than 30,000 people.

The municipal civil affairs bureau distributed tons of rice, bottle water, and instant food to the refugees.
