A rainstorm-triggered landslide in Southwest China's Guizhou Province has buried 107 people. Rescuers have reached Dazhai village in Guanling County, but they say the chances of finding survivors are very slim. Meanwhile, over one thousand villagers have been evacuated, amid fears of further landslides.

The landslide happened early Monday afternoon, a time when most villagers are taking their nap or having lunch.

Some 107 people from 38 families were buried, including over 20 students from a local primary school.

A villager who was working in the field narrowly escaped disaster.

Luo Xinggui, villager, Dazhai, said, "We were out plowing the field when suddenly half of the slope was covered with fog, we heard a loud noise as if made by planes. Then I saw mud and land collapse down on my land, like waves. I dragged my cattle and ran up the slope, I looked back to see if my wife was at home. When I turned back, within just 10-20 seconds, all the mud and earth poured down. "

The mud-rock flow covered an area of 1.5 square kilometers.

More than 600 soldiers and local residents participated in the rescue work.

Liu Dajian, Police officer, Guanling county, said, "We arrived around two, and the landslide happened at about one thirty. We evacuated people to safe areas. "

Over 1000 villagers living near the site have been evacuated to safe communities because the nearby rain-soaked mountainside is also likely to collapse.

Rains have plagued the area for a week with the heaviest rains coming on Sunday. Sunday's rain was a record amount of precipitation.
