The upper chamber of the Congress, voted unanimously to approve his nomination, after Obama did so last week.
Petraeus will replace General Stanley McChrystal, who fell out with the White House, after disparaging remarks toward the civilian leadership of the war. Petraeus, promised to forge a "unity of effort" with his civilian counterparts.
He also indicates reviewing his predecessor's rules of engagement in Afghanistan. Petraeus, re-stated his support for starting the withdrawal of US troops in Afghanistan in July 2011, a major part of Obama's new Afghan strategy.
