US Middle East envoy George Mitchell has held talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah. Their discussions are aimed at mediating the resumption of peace talks between Israel and the Palestinian National Authority. Following the meeting, top Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said he hoped an agreement could be reached.
President Abbas just concluded a meeting with Senator Mitchell in which the two main issues, or agendas, of border and security were further discussed. We really hope that before the end of the four months, the time frame specified for the proximity talks, that we can reach an agreement on borders of (19)67' for a two states solution and security-related issues.
Meanwhile, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon visited the Kerem Shalom crossing on Israel's border with Gaza on Thursday. A limited range of humanitarian goods have been allowed to cross for the past few years, but recently Israel eased restrictions by allowing the entrance of all foods and some desperately needed construction materials under international pressures. Ayalon said during his visit that they must distinguish between Hamas members and the civilian population.
