In Britain, civil servants are now facing sharp cuts to their "Golden goodbye" payments. A newly-announced plan, is expected to take effect in September. Currently, civil servants who've served more than 20 years, receive payouts equivalent to 2 years' salary and 3 to 6 years salary under certain conditions.

According to the new plan, these packages could be brought into line with those in the private sector, equivalent to just months or even weeks severance. 600-thousand public sector posts, could be eliminated in the next five years. The measures aim to save 100 billion pounds.
