Record breaking heat wave hits the northeast US

The heat wave scorching northeastern parts of the US won't let up until at least Wednesday.

In the mid-Atlantic states, temperatures are expected to increase on Tuesday up to 39 degrees Celsius. In New Jersey, the National Weather Service has issued an excessive heat watch.

Residents are being urged to drink lots of water and avoid long period in the sun. Officials in Washington, DC, declared Monday a "Code Red" day for air quality and advised taking similar precautions. Even at night, temperatures are expected to stay above 27 degrees Celsius. Wednesday was forecast to be the most humid day of the heat wave.
