In the Tour de France, Italy's Alessandro Petacchi was victorious over the fourth stage which saw riders compete in a mass sprint.
The 153 and a half kilometer stage got underway from Cambrai to the champagne capital of Reims. The 189 starters faced a daunting stage that featured only one small climb and three intermediate sprints.
Saxo Bank rider Jens Voigt led the peloton, and stretched out their advantage to 3 minutes 50 by the 25-kilometer mark.
With just four kilometers remaining the lead group was swallowed up by the peloton and it led to a mass sprint finish. It was anyone's stage over the final kilometer with all established sprinters attempting to find their positions for the run in to the line. And finally Lampre rider Alessandro Petacchi veered out wide left to get a jump on three lead riders with a few meters left, and pedaled furiously to hold them off at the finish. Fabian Cancellara of Switzerland retained the yellow jersey.
