US Defense Secretary Robert Gates is recommending General James Mattis be named new commander of US Central Command. He would be replacing General David Petraeus who was just appointed to be military commander of US troops in Afghanistan.
If confirmed, Mattis, a four-star Marine Corps general who currently commands the US Joint Forces Command, will oversee things in Iraq and Afghanistan. Gates also laid out new rules that prohibits troops from any media engagement without clearance from the Pentagon. This is part of the fallout from inappropriate remarks from Gen. Stanley McChrystal, Petraeus' predecessor.
