The US Coast Guard has given BP the green-light to complete a vital pressure test on its ruptured oil well in the Gulf of Mexico.

This, will determine if the company can proceed with a plan to temporarily seal the well, stopping its oil flow.

The Coast Guard, says the decision was made after a day of intense deliberation that reached the level of President Barack Obama and his cabinet.

Earlier, there were concerns that if the test failed, it would cause irreversible damage to the well. But, the Coast Guard says, it's provided additional direction and requested safety modifications. The test will take between six and 48 hours.
