The US has handed over to Iraq 55 detainees who were all members of Saddam Hussein's inner circle. They include the international face of the regime, Tariq Aziz.

The Iraqi government says the handover started on Monday and took place over three days. Among the detainees are Saddam's former secretary Abed Hmoud and former education and trade ministers.

Aziz became internationally known as the defender of Saddam Hussein's regime during his time as foreign minister after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait in 1990.

The handover comes as the US prepares to transfer authority of the last American-run detention facility to the Iraqi government on Thursday. 1,600 detainees currently there in US custody, will also be handed over.
