France has capped off celebrations for Bastille Day with a spectacular fireworks display at the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Thousands watched as the tower lit up with flashing lights and fireworks. Earlier in the day, troops from several African nations that gained their independence from France marched down the Champs Elysees.

Planes then flew over the capital trailing red, white and blue smoke. The July 14th national holiday marks the 1789 uprising at the Bastille prison that helped spark the French Revolution.

This year celebrates 40 years of the cultural alliance among French-speaking nations.
