The hardline stance incurred a fierce response from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The US-South Korean military exercise comes amid rising tensions between the DPRK and South Korea over the sinking of a South Korean warship in late March. The DPRK has been blamed for the incident by Washington and Seoul.

Pyongyang says they are prepared for dialogue or war in the face of the joint naval drill. The DPRK's National Defense Commission threatened to mount a nuclear deterrence to counter the muscle flexing of the US and South Korea.

They label the maneuvers as "nothing but outright provocations aimed to stifle the DPRK by force". The defense commission says it is a natural option of the army and people of the DPRK to take corresponding all-out retaliatory measures.
