US and Afghan National Army troops came under heavy militant fire on Tuesday, in the Arghandab Valley in Kandahar Province.
The soldiers responded with small arms fire, rocket propelled grenades and mortars. Elsewhere in the Arghandab district, four militants were killed as they tried to plant a roadside bomb, according to the Afghan Interior Ministry.
Kandahar is often referred to as the spiritual home of the Taliban. There has been an increase in activity in the region since NATO led forces launched operation Moshtarek in neighboring Helmand Province in February.
