Workers are on standby at flood gates along the swollen Hanjiang River, in central China's Hubei Province to prevent flooding of the provincial capital Wuhan.
More than 30,000 residents near the Dujiatai flood diversion project, an emergency reservoir in Xiantao City and neighboring Wuhan City, were evacuated overnight. As of Wednesday at noon, the water level of the reservoir had reached nearly 35.35 metres, 23 centimeters past the alert level. Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
A flood peak is expected to arrive at Xiantao on Thursday afternoon and raise the Hanjiang River's water level to just under 36 meters, surpassing the danger level of a nearby dike that guards Hanchuan City and one step closer to Wuhan.
