US and Afghan soldiers have launched a new security operation in two villages in Kandahar. They are looking to track down insurgents hiding out in the Arghandab district.
During the operation, US soldiers shot and killed a man they said was firing on them with an automatic rifle. They said another two men escaped. No weapon was recovered. American troops also found and detonated two improvised explosive devices during the operation.
The Arghandab river valley is the spiritual home of the Taliban. The insurgents have taken a heavy toll on U.S. forces in outlying combat bases.
NATO led forces are hoping to encourage local villagers to turn against the Taliban, and back provincial leaders friendly to President Hamid Karzai's government.
