The death toll from a bridge collapse in central China's Henan Province a week ago has risen to 49 with 17 others still missing. Despite the slim chances of finding survivors, rescue operations continue.

Meanwhile, two temporary bridges have been built to allow traffic to resume for 3,000 villagers. After hearing the government was building a temporary bridge, Tangying villagers rushed to the site to give a hand.

Villager Yan Shuijian said, "We got up at six in the morning, we haven't had lunch, and it must be done before night."

After 24 hours, local residents set up a simple wooden bridge.

The structure was still fragile, so women, children and the elderly were asked to wear life vests.

For safety reasons, the bridge is only open during the daytime. Local police have organized 70 staff into three groups to monitor the situation for 24 hours. Villagers have also volunteered to go into the water, to ensure the bridge remains stable.

At the same time, the local government has invested 150,000 yuan to build a floating bridge with a width of 1.5 meters. It can hold one ton, allowing small vehicles to pass.

Tan Jianfeng, head of Tantou Town said, "The flux of the currents is 30 cubic meters per second now. If the water keeps the same speed and level, the bridge will be in full use during the flood season."

Now, that the two temporary bridges are ensuring the transfer of daily goods, the local government is also mapping out a plan to build a new bridge.
