Murder of politician sparks violence in Pakistan

Violence has erupted in the Pakistani city of Karachi, after a local politician was killed.

Pakistan's Ary News channel reports as many as 40 people were killed and more than 50 were injured late Monday.

The violence broke out after unknown assailants gunned down a Sindh provincial assembly member and his bodyguard at a mosque in the Nazimabad area.

Riots broke out in Karachi, Hyderabad and other cities in the province immediately after the shooting.

Police have taken control of Karachi and other restive areas, and have urged residents to stay indoors.
