As forest fires continue to rage across Russia, neighboring Ukraine has also been facing a crisis, as flames came close to a fuel depot and a military training ground littered with unexploded shells.
At one point the blaze was less than three kilometers from a military base in the eastern border of Ukraine. Army officers, who lead Saturday's fire-fighting efforts, say the flames poses no threat to the fuel warehouse at another military base, some 60 kilometers away, as the surrounding ground had been shoveled clear, and fire engines are available. Their efforts are complicated by combat and training ammunition remaining in the forest after military exercises.
Regional authorities say only a 300-hectare fire is close to being extinguished. Wildfires in eastern Ukraine have destroyed about 1,000 hectares of land.
