Indian authorities have plugged a fuel leak on a container ship after it collided with another cargo ship, spewing 500 tons of oil into the Arabian Sea.

The spill together with 300 cargo containers that fell overboard, caused a navigational hazard, prompting the closure of Mumbai's port.

An Indian defense ministry spokesman said the oil slick has spread over an area of about five square kilometers.

News reports indicate that the collision occurred due to a failure in communication between the two ships. It's not clear what the vessels were carrying and whether the cargo included any hazardous material.
